It can be useful, upto you
does it decreases the ram life?
ActuallyNotGelb 2022-08-17 21:00:26
basically compresses stuff, to fit more in ram

why would it decrease ram life
also, what do you do on your machine that ram life is a worry

In theory everything does, but you shouldn’t have to worry for decades usually

You can play with compression algorithms to find what suits your setup

only 8 gb ram on more slots on laptop. need run multiple virtual machines

not by much, I’m pretty sure
ActuallyNotGelb 2022-08-17 21:02:59
jesus christ, the margins aren’t as thin as you’re making them out to be
also, you can look these up online, and make up your own mind
ghostinthewire 2022-08-17 21:04:38
okay mate
unboundvariable 2022-08-17 21:07:24
If you do use zram, be mindful of disabling the default enabled zswap.

Hopefully they read the wiki page and see this information anyway

I don’t see how the wiki is any useful xD (jk, read the damn wiki)

Hi, i have 2 PCs with arch on them. With one of them I’m trying to build a router. I need only one lan interface (enp2s0). How could i use dhcpd to give my other pc an ip dinamically when i connect them with said cable?

Depends on your use case, but it could increase cpu load, yes

Your understanding is incorrect.
ActuallyNotGelb 2022-08-17 21:34:16
basically RAM disk with on-the-fly disk compression

for storage of temporary files and stuff, that you may need

zram is simply a block device in RAM that can be used as a swap. but it doesn’t need to be used for swap, it can be anything. also, it means you have LESS RAM available overall to the system, not more. however, if your use case causes you to swap a lot, that means you get the benefits of swapping to a block device on RAM, instead of on disk.
ActuallyNotGelb 2022-08-17 21:36:33
yeah, I phrased it horribly wrong

it can be used for, as I said here, cache and stuff like that
but compressed

I think you should type in a normal formatting

I recommend you do research on laptops that have good Linux compatibility, for example look in forums for similar recommendation threads.

Pretty much anything you buy, Linux will run. However, there might be model specific issues. For example I recently acquired a dell and I needed to do some stuff to unlock full speed.

Basically, anything Intel 10th gen and above needs thermald installed and enabled, it seems.
