Where does this belief come from that power users do use WM or even some form of special configuration?

You’ll have to probably use a standalone layout switcher, or write some scripts to do that

I’d ask you to use a fully featured DE, like plasma, xfce or gnome.

tomazcanabrava 2022-08-29 12:16:54
you are getting nothing by using purely a window manager, unless you are really a power user.
and even power users sometimes misses things from DE’s.

power users don’t need help to configure a WM 😉

tomazcanabrava 2022-08-29 12:39:09
if a user is asking for help to configure a wm, usually that means that they shouldn’t be trying to use one yet, instead, they should get used to the system more, and understand the system that they are using – a full desktop environment will help them on that regard.
tomazcanabrava 2022-08-29 12:39:34
on the other hand, *I* am a power user – developing plasma since 2004 – and I lack the desire / time to use a system just with a WM.

doubt that. Most powerusers I know do have a hard time to install a WM. They dont care what the desktop is.

doubt that. most powerusers will just look at the documentation and configure without issues.

I’m a “power user” and also a developer, and I’m very happy with just a WM. They aren’t hard to use or set up, if you can read documentation

Depends. Mostly people who have knowledge in the programs they have to use and well yeah, they do understand the documentation. Thats however not a general thing for every program. They usually dont touch anything outside of what they have to use. Otherwise I wouldnt be needed to setup the system for them.

man, if you need to setup a system for them, they are not power users.

they can be specialists on the tooling that they use, but not linux power users =p

a linux power user will grep through man without issues.
people having issues to configure a WM should probably use a Desktop Environment.

My 2 cents:
I use both a plain WM on my desktop running Arch (I use BSPWM) and on my personal and work laptop I use Fedora (with Gnome).
I use a WM on my desktop because I have more time to play around with it. On my laptop I want something that works instantly because I have shit to do.

I dont know what a linux power user is.. You dont use linux for using linux. Linux is a just a basic tool to install something on top where you can be a power user of.

power user means that the user knows how to use the system, and how to look for help on the documentation and figure things out by themselves instead of asking for help with simple things. if the question is advanced and quite specific – then he can ask and still be a power user.

Power users at first means that thus user does need and can handle more advanced features of an application. Like I have a lot of microsoft Office power users as customers. They can barely deal with a broken printer and they dont know what to do is the system is unable to shut down.
I also have some science-y power users on RHEL who have to use the XY software on a years old gnome. most of them dont even know how to shut this down. or how to change the background image. Thats not what they need to know or what they have to. They still are power users.
Hmm can we move that to the https://t.me/guildtavern ? 😂

they are not *linux* power users, they are *tooling-specific* power users.

And why did you think making it a primary partition (if that was even possible) would help with that? Linux has 2 drivers for supporting NTFS, you can read the wiki page and decide.
