I mean the second command would translate to “recover root directory of sdXY” right?
And the first one would recover all files (so there is no difference in terms of recovered files) but not keep the hierarchy?
But would the result of both commands be the same?
of course you don’t have any fstrim timer enabled?
of course you made a disk image backup before touching anything in the damaged fs?
No, how can I do that without destroying what’s “left” on it?
3 where exactly?

Is there any differnece between using
ext4magic /dev/sdXY -R
and
ext4magic /dev/sdXY -f / -R ?
The wiki says that the first one recovers all files deleted in the last 24 hours while the second should be used to recover a directory or file

ext4magic /dev/sdXY -f / -R ?

is sdXY the same used for / ?

sdXY is the same in both commands

not what I asked

G 2022-09-11 18:29:06
And consequently everything that is “inside” it

yes, it will use the partition root (not the system root)
G 2022-09-11 18:29:59
And the first one would recover all files (so there is no difference in terms of recovered files) but not keep the hierarchy? Or would it keep it?

the hierarchy recover depends on the results
it cannot be guaranteed, in both cases
il_muflone 2022-09-11 18:32:11
if it can recover /foo/bar but not /foo you’ll have a bar file only

afaik they’re the same
il_muflone 2022-09-11 18:33:12
of course sdXY is not mounted

Yep

Sorry but I don’t know what that is, if it matters I’m on liveUSB right now

ok

I never created a backup of the system before the accident, noob mistake I know

I haven’t written anything on it yet though

the backup must live somewhere else
G 2022-09-11 18:36:52
Of course
il_muflone 2022-09-11 18:37:31
if you don’t have enough storage to make a backup, sadly ok
but if you have enough space to make a backup of the broken fs, do it now before having regrets

This is real help bro. But most times I have seen people just telling OPs to read the Wiki.
