I have two telegram.desktop files in my ~/.local/share/applications directory, the differences between them are permissions:
-rwxr–r– telegramdesktop.desktop
-rw——- userapp-Telegram Desktop.desktop
And the userapp has the following specifies in the exec line:
-workdir ~/.local/share/TelegramDesktop/
From what I understand the permissions aren’t really that important in a .desktop files, but I can’t find any info about -workdir. What does it change?

kernel-modules-hook package is really great, I will continue to use it.
Btw, that package did not solve my problem https://t.me/archlinuxgroup/611408

The first freeze after that was on September 8, 2022. There were no problems for about 18 days. And then the problem appeared again, right after this update:

September 25, 2022:
[ALPM] upgraded tzdata (2022c-1 -> 2022d-1)
[ALPM] upgraded libnghttp2 (1.49.0-1 -> 1.50.0-1)
[ALPM] upgraded tracker3 (3.3.3-1 -> 3.4.0-1)
[ALPM] upgraded libgxps (0.3.2-1 -> 0.3.2-2)
[ALPM] upgraded ghostscript (9.56.1-1 -> 10.0.0-1)
[ALPM] upgraded libspectre (0.2.10-1 -> 0.2.10-2)
[ALPM] upgraded evince (42.3-1 -> 42.3-2)
[ALPM] upgraded firefox (105.0-2 -> 105.0.1-1)
[ALPM] upgraded imagemagick (7.1.0.48-2 -> 7.1.0.49-1)
[ALPM] upgraded tracker-miners (1:2.3.5+r3+gd9d61d87f-2 -> 1:2.3.5+r3+gd9d61d87f-3)
[ALPM] upgraded tracker3-miners (3.3.1-2 -> 3.4.0-2)

And again on September 27, 2022 before and one after switching to the Zen kernel:
[ALPM] upgraded pacman (6.0.1-7 -> 6.0.1-8)
[ALPM] upgraded archlinux-keyring (20220831-1 -> 20220927-1)
[ALPM] upgraded dnsmasq (2.86-2 -> 2.87-1)
[ALPM] upgraded libxtst (1.2.3-5 -> 1.2.4-1)
[ALPM] upgraded libxxf86vm (1.1.4-5 -> 1.1.5-1)
[ALPM] upgraded gtk3 (1:3.24.34+r154+g56100ab49a-1 -> 1:3.24.34+r156+g812b3930d0-1)
[ALPM] upgraded srt (1.5.0-1 -> 1.5.1-1)
[ALPM] upgraded obs-studio (27.2.4-2 -> 28.0.2-1)
[ALPM] upgraded python-jaraco.functools (3.5.1-1 -> 3.5.2-1)
[ALPM] upgraded python-trove-classifiers (2022.8.31-1 -> 2022.9.26-1)
[ALPM] upgraded python-setuptools (1:62.3.4-1 -> 1:62.4.0-1)

I noticed that right before the freeze I have a slight audio stutter.

Seems to be a kernel problem? I’ve switched to the LTS kernel and will see if there are any freezes. The problem is that it happens randomly and is hard to debug.

Audio stutter could be due to a memory leak leading to a lack of RAM

And also, for some reason, the screen dimming function keys dont work on my laptop. Volume does. And screen dimming functions themselves work as I can dim/brighten using gnome’s tray. Seems to be pretty much just a problem with the function key.

So, I did some more research on this. The culprit is indeed the function keys, and I don’t think it’s Gnome’s fault. I used acpi_listen to see if it can see the keys. The volume keys work, the brightness keys do not. I tried to search the almighty google, found alot of issues with thinkpads, but none that seem to fit me, anyone happen to have any idea?

I would start replacing components, probably would start with PSU.

Yeah, that article pertains more to brightness control issues, mine’s more of a problem of “Function keys not recognized”. Brightness controls in Gnome’s UI are working.

farchord 2022-09-28 17:58:00
To be clear though, the Fn keys for volume control work fine
farchord 2022-09-28 17:58:21
It’s just the fn keys for brightness that dont do anything

There’s also a few options you have for automatic LAN caching, like pacserve, but each comes with their own flaws.

I have built a minimal live system with archiso. It boots into RAM and logs into tty1 automatically. Then I manually run a shell script. Perfect so far.

Now I’m wondering if I can run the script without logging in. Just print standard output/error to tty. Shutdown after the job is done.

Should I use a systemd service for this? Or are there better methods?

systemd units seem the least painful option
