hi is there a scripted way to remove all partition from a drive? I found some dd options but they are very slow and overwrite all blocks in the disk, I just want to wipe out partitions

thanks in advance

If you just want to wipe the partition table and not the actual data you can just create a new partition table with fdisk/parted/… Or overwrite the beginning of the disk only with dd

yeah I’ve used them but sometimes the partition remains and cause problem with the creation of new subvolume with btrfs

Tarch1 2022-07-29 19:05:14
i’ve found sgdisk but i don’t understand the explanation of Z option
Tarch1 2022-07-29 19:05:43
-Z —zap-all Zap (destroy) the GPT and MBR data structures and then exit. This option works much like -z, but as it wipes the MBR as well as the GPT, it’s more suitable if you want to repartition a disk after using this option, and completely unsuitable if you’ve already repartitioned the disk.
Tarch1 2022-07-29 19:07:05
the bold one means that is i have already repartitioned the disk (with parted in my example) then it won’t work?
qontinuum 2022-07-29 19:08:14
It means you have to apply it before creating the partition table
Tarch1 2022-07-29 19:11:54
ok I was misunderstanding it
Tarch1 2022-07-29 19:12:02
now I try
Tarch1 2022-07-29 19:17:56
nah doesn’t seems to work, when I run mkfs.btr the partition still there and it says that there is an existing filesystem (btrfs)
qontinuum 2022-07-29 19:18:47
Yeah because the actual data is still on disk
qontinuum 2022-07-29 19:21:21
I guess you could do something like

for dev in /dev/sdX?; do
dd if=/dev/random of=$dev bs=8192 count=4
done
dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sdX bs=8192 count=4

qontinuum 2022-07-29 19:22:38
You could also just use the force option of mkfs.btrfs
Tarch1 2022-07-29 19:26:19
mmmh maybe I can understand
Tarch1 2022-07-29 19:27:22
qontinuum 2022-07-29 19:22:38
You could also just use the force option of mkfs.btrfs

you are right, i was thinking it wasn’t good

qontinuum 2022-07-29 19:27:46
Since you are expecting to wipe the disk it isn’t a problem to do so
