Actually good, it makes sure that new packages that have new features can be installed… if you tried to install those new packages using an old rpm verison it would fail.
ChrisCromer 2022-08-02 08:23:41
That is why upgrading from old versions of pacman to new versions will fail… they add new functionality to pacman, then they add that new functionality to a ton of packages… and since you didn’t upgrade for over a year and then now try it, your whole system ends up broken.
ChrisCromer 2022-08-02 08:24:13
You are expected to upgrade in small increments constantly, large upgrades are not supported nor tested in Arch/Artix.

this is why the package manager should be compiled statically

no, because then you can take a 2 year old installation, update the pm first, and then all the packages without rendering the pm unstartable

Which would be the same as updating your package manager before you upgrade the rest of your system… congratulations, you solved the same problem rpm and xbps already solved.ππ»

except that the new pm wants a newer glibc and then refuses to start

Nope, the new version is still compiled against current libs.

Fair but it would also require a lot more packaging work
ChrisCromer 2022-08-02 08:27:43
And then when you do a dist upgrade it switches between the 2 compatible libs.

Not needed. All packages in Fedora are compiled for their version of the distro, no shared packages.
ChrisCromer 2022-08-02 08:28:33
That is why packages have the extension 35, 36, etc.
ChrisCromer 2022-08-02 08:28:59
Which match the distro release version.
Spektrum_light 2022-08-02 08:29:02
i love static compiling
ChrisCromer 2022-08-02 08:29:41
Unlike debian and ubuntu which share the same package between major releases…. even though libs have changed…
ChrisCromer 2022-08-02 08:30:25
Fedora actually recompile 100% of their packages for each new version. They don’t reuse packages from the previous version.
ChrisCromer 2022-08-02 08:31:03
This ensures that all libs are compatible.ππ»
