U have to initially, how do you even know about them then?

I guess it’s the main reason to think the installation is hard

Having a lot of stuff to learn is effectively one of the definition of “being hard”

Yep u still need to use the archwiki to make use of the cli installer, I don’t need to read any docs to use gui installer! Ik cli installers give more power but gui/ tui installers ( like in void, freebsd ) are simple and enough for my use case

I also don’t need to read any docs to unpack rootfs, mount sys run proc and dev and chroot

bbbuut, it’s only chroot and bind mount as @grakata_clem said

And you are born knowing all this

Did you knew about those stuff since birth?

To install minimal system – yes, but the amount of text for working with portage is massive

grakata_clem 2022-08-05 16:28:19
I installed Gentoo after two years or so on Artix of simple curiosity, and when I did emerge –help I was like what the hell, this is the biggest list of command options I’ve ever seen

i did a debian installation years ago, and i’m overwhelmed by the gui partitioner.

then i went to google.
“y /home”
“y esp flags”
“y root”
“wat partition size for swap etc”

i understand chroot and mount and linux fs from therr.

It was more about the fact we said the same thing at the same time but yeah definitely relevant as well xD

what text? the compilation output?

No, in handbook

Wiki page of portage is also quite large

can’t really comment on that

And I still wonder how this guy hasn’t stumbled on any dependency cycles or massive rebuild from simple USE changes on a real-world install.

i do rebuild once in a while, like that time i use the Ofast cxx flags.

At least now portage gives you a list of recommended USE flags and changes in them upon update and you just need to accept them

grakata_clem 2022-08-05 16:33:57
Guys told me that back in the days this wasn’t the case, and you needed to read about USE flags and choose them manually
grakata_clem 2022-08-05 16:34:10
Or you were going to fuck up your deps
capezotte 2022-08-05 16:34:27
still much more involved than “pacstrap to /mnt and install grub after you’re done having coffee”

grakata_clem 2022-08-05 16:35:58
Also, now you don’t need to compile stage 1-2
grakata_clem 2022-08-05 16:37:09
Devs simplified the install as much as possible
grakata_clem 2022-08-05 16:37:32
You still can do it the old way if you really want, but most people start from stage3 already
