What about MIT?

ChrisCromer 2022-08-15 17:06:07
Regardless of what the developers want.
ChrisCromer 2022-08-15 17:07:08
BSD licenses do the opposite, they put the developers first.

what about MIT?
capezotte 2022-08-15 17:08:00
copyright holders don’t have to follow the gpl, just look at aseprite (started as gpl and author closed after he felt like it) and the billion of open-source commercial software with proprietary premium modules

MIT is kinda middle ground, it protects the code, but doesn’t require you to share it, just acknowledge who owns it.

Which leaves him open to legal issues. Obviously nobody is going to go after him though…

It is what forces me to put a “made with godot which is MIT” in the credits for my game.

capezotte 2022-08-15 17:10:26
Nobody else had contributed to Aseprite, and he keeps the last GPLv2 version freely available.
ChrisCromer 2022-08-15 17:10:41
If it wasn’t MIT, I wouldn’t have to state what I used to make the game.

Exactly, nobody will go after him… But his software isn’t that big, only pixel artists use it.

I think it’s fair, you get a fully-free game engine, but you need to give credits, it only takes a second, and no pay money, and godot receives its credits and partly more “advertising”

Don’t get me wrong, I am happy to say it. Just saying that the MIT forces it, not a decision the user gets.

qontinuum 2022-08-15 17:13:33
Outside any license stuff, I think it is always good to give credit to the used projects (the free ones, fuck paid ones)

In addition to the fact that is not specified that it must be on the splash screen, you can put it in the credits of the game, in the options or wherever you want, but within the game

As I said, not a complaint, just mentioning how MIT works.

I get saying BSD is good because it lets the whole world use your software no-strings-attached, but saying that it keeps (the original) developers in charge doesn’t make much sense. If you meant developers in general, then yeah, I kind of agree.

Another exception to this is selenux works

capezotte 2022-08-15 17:15:44
(The supreme way to keep the original developers in charge is gnuplot license 😎)

Neither the name of the copyright holder nor the names of its contributors may be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software without specific prior written permission.
