Also who prevents you from using your PC while you compile?
Depending on what you do, compiling anything might degrade your activity or even outright preventing it.

Flexibility, obviously… USE flags, portage masking, compiling from source which makes binaries suited exactly for your system
which profile do you use
grakata_clem 2022-08-16 18:32:02
Not to some sysadmin guy who recompiles his system once in a month

I’m not some newb, right? I can read manuals and know what I do…

I use musl, so I am quite limited in profile choice
grakata_clem 2022-08-16 18:34:03
But when I used glibc, I used multilib glibc

If you did really do that, you’d know that most of optimizations moved from buldtime to runtime for the heavy stuff like browsers, etc. So, compiling everything on your own doesn’t improve things by high margins. I bet you don’t get 2 digits of improvement, percentage wise.
Rougreh 2022-08-16 18:34:21
oh ok
Rougreh 2022-08-16 18:34:25
why not hardened

Mind to share your PC specs on which you use gentoo?

Sure, call actual factual information bs, just to pretend you’re not wasting your time and resources.

Because I don’t need higher security, no one is touching my PC and I don’t visit shady websites, also I have firewall with clamav

You can call what I say “shit”, “bs”. Doesn’t change the fact I’m right. I don’t have any problem with you wasting your time. I do have a problem with you wasting resources to do so.

I think that when Arch start pushing x86_64-v3 packages, it’s going to be the final nail on gentoo’s coffin.

I think the only way using gentoo that would make it moral is if you’re using the warmth generated by your computer while compiling stuff to actually warm someone in need. Other than that it’s completely circle jerking.
what about using It to harden your system .-.

Dude, I think Gentoo is amazing as a distro. Just drop the “i compile everything so it will run faster” excuse, because it’s not true anymore. Haven’t been for years now
