I compress my kernel with lz4

The reason I use zstd is because it has a decent compression rate and its uncompress speed is godly when I need to extract some files.

all 3 of them

For backups you will want best compression ratio, speed doesn’t really count

Depends on what you’re backing up and why. If you never touch the backed up files, yes more compression is better. Sometimes I need my files that are backed up, so extracting them quicker is nice.

Updates can increase or decrease size.

Usually backups are cold storage, what you are referring is more about snapshots

No, just backups of files that I think I don’t need quick access to. But sometimes I will need them a couple months down the road.

For example when someone asks me for university material for courses I already passed.
ChrisCromer 2022-09-10 23:59:19
I have roughly 50GB of course material. And extracting it to send a classmate material used to take a while before I just switched over to zstd. But they are files I never usually need myself.

I have a new package request: xnview !

That’s a pretty sick move. In all senses.
It’s a total hack.
And it’s a total performance killer in most cases. Not to mention that you are, actually, leaving contents of your RAM on Google’s servers. Like… Some programs(like OpenVPN) explicitly state that they store credentials in memory while running

michael_pines 2022-09-11 00:23:52
But it sure has its uses.
