flatpaks are the future

they have money on their side and vendor libraries

Meanwhile systemd wants to infect initrd.

systemd’s mkosi-initrd Talked Up As Better Alternative To Current Initrd Handling –
PhoronixRed Hat engineer and systemd developer Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek presented on Monday at the Linux Plumbers Conference on a new design for inital RAM disks (initrd) making use of the new systemd mkosi-initrd project.

and in a better way disk-space wise

you definitely don’t know what you’re talking about
Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 17:47:04
i would say my only complaint about flatpaks is the fact that those runtimes collect cves like motherfuckers

I’ve been packaging for nix since 2014, probably wrote half the articles on emacs on their wiki. I think I have the right credentials to say that the solution that’s been out for a decade longer does a similar job
m3lcore 2022-09-14 17:49:58
I’m biased, so I wont state that it does the job better
Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 17:50:24
then you just don’t know all the problems flatpak solves
Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 17:50:45
it’s not like i’m a huge fan of it, to be clear

I would argue that it is similar to a pro-systemd argument. No other init system quite does what systemd does.
Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 17:52:33
systemd isn’t an init system
m3lcore 2022-09-14 17:52:47

systemd isn’t an init system
Flatpak isn’t a package manager
m3lcore 2022-09-14 17:53:10
to be fair, neither is nix.

it kinda is. but even if it wasn’t it solves problems nothing else solves
Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 17:54:56
unlike systemd that replaces other solutions

Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 17:55:58
neither does anything else
Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 17:56:03

The packaging problem is a little vague, could you explain which aspect are you referring to?

to make linux systems commercially viable on the normal desktop market (including consumer market), there should be software desktop users need, available. for that there should be a platform that is at least somewhat uniform, for devs to package software for. also there should be infrastructure set up for paid apps too. flatpak solves, or is preparing to solve this problem (together with other somewhat rh projects like systemd and gnome)
Glats 2022-09-14 18:06:20
i’d say linux (as desktop) be less like a frankenstein creation. the SO should be as a whole instead taking a piece of software here and there
Glats 2022-09-14 18:06:42
i don’t know if linux per se. but a new approach could be really great
Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 18:07:30
as much as i fucking hate the paradigm of “dev packages the software”, that’s what people need. it has to be implemented in a decent way tho, so linux (systemd-flatpak-gnome) platform doesn’t descend into second windows
Glats 2022-09-14 18:07:38
i don’t like rust but redox-os looks promising
