it’s called no wifi*

in fact that’s why i think systemd is taking over every space in linux. but systemd is a bad strategy by design. it practically copied the bad things from osx and windows (launchd and svchosts).

to make linux systems commercially viable on the normal desktop market (including consumer market), there should be software desktop users need, available. for that there should be a platform that is at least somewhat uniform, for devs to package software for. also there should be infrastructure set up for paid apps too. flatpak solves, or is preparing to solve this problem (together with other somewhat rh projects like systemd and gnome)
OK. I agree that this is something that snap and flatpak have a monpoloy over. I would disagree on your definition of “problem”, but this is a valid point.

well. it didn’t win the market for some reason. maybe because of licensing?
Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 18:10:16
snap is even worse, sadly. it’s a bit more fast paced, at least in terms of having apps marked as ones coming from the devs directly, but it has even more problems than flatpak does
fernaovellozo 2022-09-14 18:10:17
no, rather because BSD goes against the designs of multibillion corporations, such as microsoft and ibm
Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 18:10:20
(at least afaik)

there’s plenty of speculation, but the one I like most is because the original BSD authors were being sued by AT&T and had to prove no code from them remained

With regards to commercial viability, nixOS is a DevOps platform, preferred by many. In some ways, it’s as successful as android, being Linux-based and using mostly free software.
It is very opinionated, and creates extra friction to adoption of non-free software (that’s by design). But if you needed to set up Steam with nix, you could do it.

Because I am a male. 🤦🏻♂

nixos is in top of gnu/linux
Glats 2022-09-14 18:15:33
i don’t think is a good approach (IMO)
m3lcore 2022-09-14 18:16:18
There have been other attempts at a transactional package manager. GUIX is the most notable (and IMO successful)

yes, and flatpak is a platform to package software for (i mean it’s gonna be at some point). so while they have a subset of smaller problems they both solve, their major goals are different
Night_H4nter 2022-09-14 18:18:17
so, one isn’t better than the other, they’re different things

some 40 years ago, BSD already existed, but IBM and M$ were actively developing DOS, clearly an inferior system
then, IBM was forced to give up their hold on the desktop market, which cleared the way for M$ to take it over, with all their flavors of windows (95/98 and NT)
fast-forward to the XXI century, where both companies are betting their chips on the LInux kernel

In the grand scheme of things yes. Practically speaking, NixOS is far more reliable than ilverblue and also has a wider gamut of supported packages once you enable the non-free repos.
m3lcore 2022-09-14 18:20:02
Plus you don’t get theming problems

Sandboxing isn’t full of holes (because it’s external, and require no special tooling)

but those are implementations of systems, not the systems themselves. moreover, one of them is extremely immature

it might be somewhat usable even today, but there’s a shit ton of work to get done before even the core principals’ implementations are feature complete on high level

after all it’s nice to have linux, bsd, and other. i mean it’s free and despite having errors the efforts of communities and developers are appreciated.
m3lcore 2022-09-14 18:23:37
We would probably need to wait for another 3-4 years to see the comparison be actually fair.

Glats 2022-09-14 18:24:18
there are companies contributing to this and you can come and use it, even if you have to stick to their business model.
m3lcore 2022-09-14 18:24:28
We’re not cannibalising each other’s resources, we’re trying to take a piece out of Windows. So we shouldn’t be fighting over which is better, we should be borrowing ideas.
