Depends on where the fans are located.
ChrisCromer 2022-09-29 23:54:56
On my previous laptop they vented upward between the monitor and back… So closed would be a problem

same as my ideapad
ChrisCromer 2022-09-29 23:55:22
On my new one they vent out the back, so no issue.

Not really, US patents are only enforceable within the US. So it would only effect distros connected to companies in the US… Such as red hat. If a fork of fedora is based in another country, they wouldn’t be effected by the patent.

Nope, they would have to patent it in each country, it isn’t something global.

ah well. few countries form the UE
Glats 2022-09-30 02:01:08
like Germany
Glats 2022-09-30 02:01:28
and that affect suse
ChrisCromer 2022-09-30 02:01:28
True, but they can patent it in Germany, not the whole UE.
ChrisCromer 2022-09-30 02:02:06
And patenting costs money, so usually not worth it to do it in every country.
ChrisCromer 2022-09-30 02:03:09
So I could fork Fedora right here in Chile, add the codecs, and the US patent office and the patent owner couldn’t do shit.
ChrisCromer 2022-09-30 02:03:44
Patents != Licensing
Glats 2022-09-30 02:05:07
a yeah

@BrodieOnLinux @thomasdcameron @GradyDoesTweets Legal reasons. Before now I wasn’t across patent licensing in video and how it works from a legal point of view. I am now. It didn’t work like I and 90% of people assume it works. I took responsibility for cleaning it up.

From what I understand, ttp11 would effect intelectual property, not patents.
