On my previous laptop they vented upward between the monitor and back… So closed would be a problem

Not really, US patents are only enforceable within the US. So it would only effect distros connected to companies in the US… Such as red hat. If a fork of fedora is based in another country, they wouldn’t be effected by the patent.
