Is switching from w11 to arch linux really worth it?
If you have a reason for it then yeah

I’m talking pure arch
A) why do you wanna switch
B) why arch
C) is it for daily usage or what exactly you are going to use it for
Answer these so that I can tell you the answer

It will only work in local network
malware_hacker_bot 2022-09-09 18:57:01
And probably won’t work if you don’t have a WiFi adaptor and you are using like localhost in vm and trying to open in main os

How can I update my bios without installing Windows? Can I do that by running the HP bios update from a windows to go installation on an external SSD?

There should be the ability to ‘flash’ your bios with a USB stick with it on it. As well as the way you’re discussing.
Kiro 2022-09-09 19:49:20
I felt pretty unsure doing it directly from wtg so I just used it to flash the bios on a usb stick
cancrl18 2022-09-09 19:49:37
As far as I know if you put the ..nevermind you did it right sounds like.
cancrl18 2022-09-09 19:49:44
Was it as hard as you were worried about?
cancrl18 2022-09-09 19:49:54
usually they’re without incident but occasionally there can be weird issues.

No it was pretty easy
Kiro 2022-09-09 19:52:59
Just like a normal bios update, I just didn’t know how to run it since HP only distributes exe
cancrl18 2022-09-09 20:07:49
weird, cool it booted though.

Hello, I have a question (sorry if maybe it will be trivial for you). It is possible to associate a name to a linux command ? For example: if I want to associate the name “example” to the command “ls -l” so whenever I’ll write “example” on the terminal it will return me the output of the “ls -l” command. Thanks.
Zenexer 2022-09-09 20:12:17
You can use aliases for that
Zenexer 2022-09-09 20:12:49
Edit ~/.bashrc (the .bashrc file in your home directory) and add the following:
Zenexer 2022-09-09 20:12:59
alias example=’ls -l’
cancrl18 2022-09-09 20:13:08
I thought it was called aliasing but I wasn’t sure how to achieve it.
Zenexer 2022-09-09 20:13:30
The next time you open your shell, it’ll have the alias. If you don’t want to open a new shell, run . ~/.bashrc
Zenexer 2022-09-09 20:13:40
(that’s a period followed by a space)

What do you mean? Why is it weird?
cancrl18 2022-09-09 20:14:28
Wish it was easy to add a ‘color’ to text without a weird command, it’d make stuff like easier to read for sure.

thank you. I think it is exactly what I mean

Just interesting they used a exe instead of a msi.

cancrl18 2022-09-09 20:15:05
I don’t use prebuilts anymore, and I don’t remember the last time I flashed my bios, I know it’s likely updated though as I’m on a 2014 CPU built in 2017 and I’ve flashed since then.
cancrl18 2022-09-09 20:15:35
In fact before I flipped from Windows to Linux exclusively I ran a update check which I think included a bios check.
cancrl18 2022-09-09 20:16:09
My motherboard maker has those one ‘update’ softwares that lets you download or install the various parts updates yourself if you want.

HP is pretty weird with sending updates, this bios update was from april and I was on windows till like june, I just discovered about this update randomly
cancrl18 2022-09-09 20:18:14
I noticed bios updates don’t happen too often anyways, unless there’s a huge security risk/dangerous part/software it tends to languish.
Kiro 2022-09-09 20:30:10
Yeah I updated it just because I thought it would somehow increase the performances but no just security patches, which is still good tho
